Mary MacKillop College

New General Learning Area Building

Deicke Richards worked closely with Mary MacKillop College in Nundah to shape a cohesive, future-focused campus through strategic master planning and carefully considered building projects. In 2019, we completed a new master plan for the College using an enquiry by design process, marked by broad consultation with students, staff, and community stakeholders. The resulting plan reflects the College’s Josephite heritage while setting a robust framework for growth and the delivery of inclusive Catholic education.

A key first step in this vision is the recently completed three-storey General Learning Area (GLA) and Library building, located on a prominent campus corner. This building delivers flexible classrooms, purpose-built design technology spaces, and a modern library that meets evolving educational needs. The ground floor provides a much-needed undercover eating area with provision for a future canteen, while a new Buckland Street entry enhances the school’s community presence and connectivity with Nundah.

The design for this new building draws inspiration from the adjacent Corpus Christi Church—integrating the rich red of its brickwork into the architecture and colour palette, alongside complementary orange, brown, blues, and greens for depth and warmth. This approach creates a dialogue between heritage and innovation, affirming the College’s identity while providing vibrant, flexible spaces for students and staff.
