The Snowy Mountains Special Activation Precinct (SAP) was announced in November 2019 after feedback on the Go Jindabyne master plan revealed the need to expand the project focus to the entire Snowy Mountains region.
The NSW Department of Planning, Industry and Environment, in collaboration with the Department of Regional NSW, thereafter commenced work on a 40-year master plan – with the aim of growing a strong one-season visitor economy into a successful year-round destination by stimulating economic development and investment as well as employment.
In 2020, Deicke Richards provided urban design support to the Jensen PLUS team on the development of a Snowy Mountains SAP structure plan to identify and guide key areas of growth and change for Jindabyne and the Snowy Mountains as a whole. Participating in Enquiry by Design (EbD) workshops in Jindabyne, our team worked to determine and articulate alpine design character (elements of architectural design that can apply to all locations and enhance a distinctive and climatically appropriate design character) and create imagery for all structure plans.
Early in the master planning process, DPIE’s draft vision for the SAP was formalised into a strategic framework for planning and future development. This framework has continued to guide the structure plans for all sub-precincts, with additional design principles established for specific and localised design outcomes.
The structure plans for the Kosciuszko National Park destinations and resorts centre on infill and improvement of existing facilities as well as a small number of ‘new’ locations.
The Snowy Mountains SAP draft master plan was exhibited for 56 days up until midnight 23 August 2021 and can be viewed here.
