This project was the first for the BHC, now Queensland’s largest not-for profit housing developer.
Located in the Bowen Hills urban renewal precinct, the project’s interface with the street was considered radically urban for Brisbane at the time. The development included boarding house accommodation, studios, and one and two bedroom apartments.
The Jeays Street project was intended to help meet a critical and growing need for affordable housing in the inner suburbs. Its location at the time was a challenging non-residential area of Bowen Hills and the development was planned as a catalyst for the proposed “urban village”, envisaged by the then Urban Renewal Task Force.
